A Romanian national was remanded for two days by Nicosia district court on Tuesday, a day after he was arrested at the Ledra Street crossing point during routine checks of pedestrians.

Customs officers selected the individual, who was carrying two pieces of luggage from the north to the south, for inspection.

The luggage was found to contain only untaxed packages of rolling tobacco for cigarettes, with a total weight of 15kg.

He was taken into custody while the luggage and its contents were confiscated.

Preliminary investigations indicate the man had received the luggage containing tobacco in the north and was intending to transport it through Paphos Airport to the United Kingdom.
