In this video, we learn the story behind Girls That Scuba – a sisterhood of diving enthusiasts and marine conservation ambassadors from all over the world.
Five years ago, celebrating the ocean and exploring its marine mysteries were very much part of divemaster Sarah Richard’s personal joy of life. But in terms of community, she didn’t really believe scuba diving was a sport other women would be interested in.
“I just thought that scuba diving was for men,” she says. “But then I kind of thought to myself: it would be so cool to have more girls to dive with.”
Finding nothing online to fit the bill, Richard decided to create a community herself, founding Girls That Scuba in the UK, in 2016.
Yet, flash forward to the present day and the all-female diving network has over 23,000 Facebook followers worldwide, with members connecting over everything from dive sites and gear to the importance of conserving the health of our oceans.
