There is a neighbourhood in the centre of Nicosia that resides quietly next to Pediaios river and is filled with narrow streets, old houses with high ceilings and indoor yards but also funky bars and taverns where locals gather. The old neighbourhood of Agioi Omologites is made up of just a few streets, each filled with mostly family homes but there are many more details that make this area special. An elementary school, a church, an illustration studio and dozens of other spots that are to be discovered. In an upcoming event this Sunday, the Agioi Omologites Cultural Workshop invites people to come and hear the history of this quaint neighbourhood.
An interactive tour will take place at 5.30pm and 6.30pm with different stops in the historical centre. Visitors will be able to move freely, in groups and families (in accordance with pandemic protocols), with a map (printed or digital) that will lead them to the stops around the neighbourhood. At each stop, animators will impersonate historical characters, allowing visitors to observe, locate and interact with the past and present to gain acquaintance with the neighbourhood’s treasures and peculiarities. It will be necessary for visitors to use a mobile phone with a QR code reader app that will lead them to the interactive activities at each station.
“Ayioi Omoloyites is a village inside the city,” say the organisers, “a historical centre that may lay outside of the walls of the Old City of Nicosia, but is an integral part of it.” The two-hour-long tours take place within the European programme Echoes of the City, Ayioi Omoloyites, with the contribution of international and local volunteers of the European Solidarity Corps. Sunday’s event welcomes neighbourhood residents, interested explorers, families and beyond to discover more about a charming part of town.
