Cultural evenings at Axiothea Mansion return this week as the University of Cyprus’ Axiothea Cultural Festival resumes. The 24th cultural festival completed a full June and July programme with high-quality performances of theatre, music and cinema and many more are about to take place!

This year’s festival pays tribute to numerous important occasions. The 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution is of course one of them as is the 700 years since Dante’s death. For this, Axiothea is participating in a broader series of international events dedicated to the great Italian poet with a three-day event that will commence on September 27 titled Dante and the Waters of Cyprus.

In the festival’s first edition earlier this summer, the performances also paid tribute to the 50 years since the death of George Seferis, the 100th anniversary of the birth of the famous Cypriot director and Doctor Honoris Causa of the School of Letters of the University of Cyprus Michael Cacoyannis, the 100th anniversary of the birth of Astor Piazzola, and a tribute in honour of Psarantonis on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of his collaboration with the University of Cyprus.

The autumn edition of the festival opens on Thursday with a musical evening by singer and songwriter Eleni Era. The Berlin-based alternative pop artist is returning to Axiothea to present her second album, Younger Heart, which features dreamy pop merged with baroque drifts layered with the sonic luminosity of the artist’s electric-acoustic orchestrations. About a dozen more performances and events are scheduled for the autumn edition, with the festival lasting until mid-October.
