Cyprus recorded the eighth highest workforce percentage of firefighters in the EU in 2025, with 1,200 firefighters corresponding to 0,24 per cent of total employment in the country, according to data published by Eurostat on Monday.

Across the EU in 2025 there were 372,400 professional firefighters, representing 0.18 per cent of the total employment in the bloc.

Fire services relied on younger staff, with 74.7 per cent of all employed firefighters being under the age of 50, compared with 64.4 per cent in total employment.

Among the 22 countries with available data, Greece with 0.47 per cent, Croatia 0.43 per cent and Portugal 0.33 per cent recorded the highest shares of firefighters in the total employment.

The lowest shares were recorded in The Netherlands with 0.05 per cent, Austria 0.07 per cent and Sweden 0.10 per cent.
