Larnaca’s cultural agenda presents one more exciting event, just before the month ends. Back for its second edition is the Larnaca Film Festival, which this year presents a four-day agenda of film screenings, live music, workshops and walking tours. Organised by the Larnaca Film Club, the festival will spread through parks, squares and neighbourhoods from August 27 to 30.
Supported by the deputy ministry of culture and Larnaca Municipality, the festival presents a bigger agenda this year, including the Common Ground Cinema Experience section, organised in collaboration with Larnaka2030 and the Batroun Mediterranean Film Festival.
The festival’s opening ceremony on Thursday, August 27 will fill Larnaca Municipal Garden with music. A concert by the Aurora String Quartet will kick off the festivities at 8pm as the musicians present musical themes from iconic films of world cinema, under the artistic direction of Artemisia Vassiliou. Then, at 8.30pm, the first film screening of the festival will take place, showing La Belle Époque.
The second day begins with a morning workshop for educators titled Film & Literature: A hands-on workshop for educators, at the Larnaca House of Letters and Arts. It begins at 9.30am, in Greek, led by trainer Maria Leonida.
Through practical examples, participants will study the direction and screenplay of a specific film which was based on a book, learn the basic principles of coordinating a film crew and film their own version. The workshop is offered for free, but online registration is required as space is limited.

In the afternoon, the walking tour One Neighbourhood-Many Faces will take place at 6.45pm. Led by Andria Efthymiou, participants will meet at Athens Avenue, in front of the Lion of Venice statue, exploring the revitalised Tourkomahala, where artists of all ages live and create, before ending at Mesogeios Park for the day’s screening. There, the family film Dancing Queen will be shown at 8pm.
August 29’s programme begins with another workshop, this one for teenagers aged 11 to 15. The film workshop titled One Object, Five Perspectives starts at 10am at the House of Letters and Arts. Teens will work in small groups and stage photoshoots by using symbols and stereotypes that derive from film and television. This too will take place in Greek, is for free and needs registration.
In the evening, Salina Park will host the Common Ground Cinema Experience where parallel screenings of short films will unfold at three different outdoor locations. Three screens will present the films Ebb & Flow, What If They Bomb Here Tonight?, One Last Time, Crow Man and There Is No Other Cyprus.
A discussion with the filmmakers will follow the screening of the documentary There Is No Other Cyprus, in collaboration with PRIO Cyprus.
The final festival day features the walking tour Larnaca in the Foreground with Andria Efthymiou leaving from Europe Square at 6.45pm, a screening of the Cypriot film Thank You for Banking With Us at Zouhouri Square at 8pm and a final concert at 9.30pm by Kontovourkis & Co that will wrap up the festival events.
