Famagusta Gate’s imposing stone arches, lush courtyard and bougainvillea is the scene for one of the most distinctive spots in Old Nicosia. Here, a new PAUL is bringing the art of French baking and patisserie to a space with a distinct architectural identity, creating a new destination for coffee, culinary delights and daily get-togethers.

The official opening of PAUL by Famagusta Gate took place on Monday, November 2, 2026, attended by guests drawn from the local authorities, business community, as well as the media and lifestyle sector.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos. “Today we are officially breathing new life into a venue that is symbolic of our city, which, for many years, served as a meeting place for the people of Nicosia,” he said, in his address. “With the arrival of PAUL, an internationally-renowned brand that stands out for the quality of its products and services, I believe we have won a major victory for the area.”

Mayor Prountzos also thanked the PHC Group for its investment and collaboration with the Municipality, emphasising that “our city is changing, becoming more outward-looking and coming to life in every corner”.

Attendees and guests had the opportunity to explore the venue first-hand, as part of an evening featuring music, exquisite dishes from the PAUL menu and a selection of wines and cocktails.

Referring to the significance of the location for PAUL, a company spokesperson hailed the milestone. “We wanted to create a PAUL that we could all be proud of. A space that we believe stands out — even amongst all the PAULs around the world,” they said, adding that “this blend of French tradition and the history of Nicosia is what makes this PAUL so special to us. Here, next to the Gate, we want to make our own small contribution to life in the Old Town.”

Respect for history, space for everyday life

The new space was designed with due regard for the building’s architectural heritage and in close collaboration with Nicosia Municipality and the relevant authorities. The shared aim was to preserve its historical identity and showcase it within the city’s contemporary life.

At the new PAUL, everyday enjoyment takes on a whole new dimension. A fragrant coffee with a butter croissant in the courtyard, brunch with friends or a leisurely meal provide the perfect opportunity to savour your time at the neighbourhood’s own pace.

The menu combines classic French recipes with new creations developed especially for this particular shop. Freshly-baked breads, croissants and other French bakery creations, favourite desserts such as vanilla mille-feuille and chocolate éclairs, as well as an extensive selection for brunch, lunch and dinner, come together to offer a range that caters for different times of the day.

Beyond its culinary offering, PAUL at Famagusta Gate aims to become part of everyday life in Old Nicosia. Its presence provides yet another reason for residents and visitors to visit the historic centre, explore the walled city and spend more time in the area, thereby contributing to its vibrancy and appeal.

The PAUL tradition since 1889

The history of PAUL began in 1889, in a small bakery near Lille in France. Five generations later, a love of good bread, patisserie and the authentic French art de vivre remains at the heart of its philosophy.

In Cyprus, PAUL continues to expand its presence, with the new shop being the fifth on the island and the third in Nicosia. The other shops are located on Zinas Kanthers Street, at the Mall of Cyprus, at the Metropolis Mall and at Limassol Marina.
