Police investigate negligence after woman dies following surgery

Police confirmed on Monday they are investigating medical negligence related to the death of 31-year-old mother who died over the weekend following a surgery at a private hospital in Larnaca.

Katerina Pekri died in the intensive care unit of the Nicosia general hospital on Saturday, where she was transferred nine days previously, after experiencing complications following a gastric sleeve surgery at a Larnaca-based private clinic.

The case is under investigation on suspicion of medical negligence after her family reported it to the police, a police spokesman confirmed to the Cyprus Mail on Monday.

Meanwhile, an autopsy is being carried out by state pathologists, while a private forensic examiner, Panicos Stavrianos, was also appointed by the deceased’s father, according to media reports.

Pekri is survived by her husband and two sons.
