A fire that broke out on Thursday at the edge of the Kelia state forest is believed to have been intentional.

The Forestry Department reported on Friday that the fire started at 11am on Thursday in two separate locations, approximately 20 meters apart. Authorities suspect that the fires were the result of a malicious act.

The fire was under control by 12.53pm, having burnt two hectares of cane.

A total of 15 firefighters and six fire engines were deployed – 12 officers and five vehicles from the Forestry Department and three officers and one vehicle from the Fire Service.
