The Cyprus Animal Party has proposed the adoption of an “Adopt My Christmas Tree” programme to help reduce excessive logging and promote sustainable tree use.
In a statement, the party noted that the forestry department, in its efforts to meet public demand for Christmas trees, timber sales and other purposes, often engages in excessive logging.
As a result, trees with excellent characteristics are also being cut down.
To address this, the party suggests that the forestry department implement a programme where high-quality Scots Pine seedlings are planted in approximately 10-litre pots, allowing families to have their own Christmas tree without contributing to deforestation.
The party also called on the agriculture minister to address the issue and take appropriate measures for the better management of forests and trees.
