A 50-year-old man accused of murdering his brother-in-law last summer in Peyia was sentenced to 25 years in prison by the Paphos criminal court on Friday, Paphos deputy head of operations Michalis Nicolaou has said.

The man had previously pleaded guilty to the charge of murder, as well as charges of carrying a firearm and explosives without the necessary permits.

The incident occurred on July 3, 2024, during a family gathering in Peyia. The 50-year-old, the 43-year-old victim, and other relatives were dining together when an argument broke out. The dispute escalated into a physical altercation, prompting others at the table to intervene and separate the two men.

The suspect reportedly left the scene but returned shortly after, armed with a firearm. He then fatally shot his brother-in-law before fleeing. Authorities arrested him in the early hours of July 4.
