Education Minister Athena Michaelidou on Friday laid the foundation stone for what will become the Lycabettus nursery school in Nicosia.

She said the foundation stone “marks the beginning of a vision which is gradually becoming reality” and that that vision is “based on the need for quality, equal, and accessible preschool education”.

“We are demonstrating the government’s commitment to strengthening education at every stage of children’s development … The future of society is built from the ground up. Preschool education is the cornerstone of a healthy education system and the basis of social cohesion,” she said.

She went on to say that her ministry is “focusing on continuously strengthening the provision of quality pre-primary education, ensuring that all children, regardless of socio-economic background, have access to equal learning and development opportunities during the most sensitive and decisive time of their lives”.

“Recognising the fundamental importance of education, we are treating it as the basic prerequisite for personal fulfilment, social cohesion, and economic prosperity,” she said.

She added, “education is the most important pillar for the creation of a modern, fair, and competitive society which is capable of meeting the challenges of the present and building the future with confidence”.
