The contractor tasked with undertaking the construction of a building in which 43-year-old George Constantinou died has been arrested, the police announced on Saturday.

The police said the contractor, also aged 43, was arrested after “the evaluation of evidence and testimonies which emerged from the investigation”.

His court hearing took place in a private hospital, as he reported feeling unwell after his arrest. He was remanded in custody for two days.

Constantinou, a plumber by trade, was found dead in the basement of the under-construction building in the Limassol suburb of Yermasoyia on Wednesday.

Investigations determined that he fell through a hole in the floor which was intended to be a lift shaft once the building’s construction was complete.
