Officers aboard a police boat off the coast of Cape Greco discharged their weapons on Thursday after being rammed by a boat, the police said on Thursday.
The incident reportedly took place at around 3pm, with the officers aboard the police vessel spotting the speedboat and ordering it to stop.
However, the speedboat’s captain failed to comply and a chase ensued, with a second police boat joining the chase soon after.
The speedboat then attempted to ram both police boats, with the officers then firing warning shots in an attempt to deter its captain.
The police then fired shots at the speedboat’s engine, eventually immobilising it.
They were then able to arrest its captain and take him to the Larnaca port, where he was identified as a national of a European Union member state and arrested.
The police’s investigation into the matter is ongoing.
