One person was arrested for living in Cyprus without the requisite papers on Wednesday night as the police conducted their latest operation in Nicosia’s old town.
The police said the raid was carried out “as part of ongoing actions to ensure public order and illegality”, with the police on the scene between 5pm and 11pm.
A total of 31 premises and 34 people were inspected.
In addition to the man who was arrested, the police also said they found “fire safety violations”, including “inadequate means of escape”, as well as the use and storage of LPG in enclosed spaces and a lack of fireproof partitions.
They also said they found businesses committing “tax violations”, including one which did not accept credit payment and one which had not registered to pay value added tax.
Other things the police found included that some people were working and being paid cash-in-hand, and that others were being paid less than the minimum wage.
The police said such operations “will continue with the aim of ensuring legality and safety in the area”.
