A total of 677,133 vehicles have had their road tax renewed as of March 8, compared to 680,670 by the same date last year, the road transport department (TOM) said on Monday.
Vehicle owners have until midnight on Wednesday to renew them for 2026 without extra charge.
Late renewals will incur a €10 fine plus 10 per cent extra charge of the current year’s registration fee.
The road tax permits can be renewed for three, six, nine or 12 months.
Those who renewed in 2025 but do not plan to renew for 2026 must submit a notice of vehicle immobilisation online.
Vehicles not renewed or immobilised may be removed from the TOM register if the 2025 tax remains unpaid by the deadline.
Owners of destroyed vehicles must submit form TOM 98A with a Certificate of Destruction to avoid fees from the date of destruction.
Most renewals are completed online year-round.
No individual renewal notices are sent.
Owners should update their TOM contact details to receive important information, including recalls.
