Vladimiros Tziortzis said he is targeting the Nascar Whelen Euro Series title at a press conference in Nicosia on Friday.
The talented Cypriot driver will compete again this year in the EuroNascar 2 category with Italian team Academy Motorsport / Alex Caffi Motosport and the technical support of Petri Corse Automobili with experience in Formula 4 and GT’S.
This is the European version of Nascar which in the US is the most popular motorsport championship.
“This year I will compete with the No.5 on the doors of a Chevrolet Camaro and the goal is, to win the championship, a success to which we have come quite close in the past two years,” Tziortzis said
“I have completed my last pre-season a few days ago in Italy, and the feeling of the car is very good,” said Tziortzis, who will drive the car driven last year by former F1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve.
“The championship starts on May 13 at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia, where I was on the podium twice last year. The goal for this year is to win both races.
“I want to thank from the bottom of my heart my supporters who are by my side this year, especially in this difficult time, as in the last few years there have been significant cuts in sponsorships to athletes.”
Tziortzis is supported this year by ALCO Filters, ENEOS Motor Oil, Psaltis Auto Parts, the Ministry of Cyprus Tourism, Televantos Used Trucks, Sana Hiltonia and Daytona Raceway.
Regarding financing, Tziortzis said: “The budget has never been covered in the last ten years while I’m representing our island. It is always supplemented by invisible heroes back home and my parents, who deserve the biggest thank you for all the support they give me.”
Regarding the cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism, the Cypriot said that “it is an important support and I thank the people of the ministry who showed how much they wanted to cooperate and how much they believe in me.”
Each weekend includes a qualifying session and two races (in the second race the drivers starting grid is based on their fastest laps in the first race).
Croatia will host the finale, where the points count double during the two races of the season.
All the action every weekend will be broadcast live on Kreator TV, MsMotorTV, Sky Channel 229 and at www.facebook.com/EuroNASCAR and at www.youtube.com/c/EuroNASCAR.
