A 44-year-old man has been arrested on Thursday to assist police investigations into a fatal road accident involving negligent driving and driving under the influence of drugs.

According to Larnaca police spokesperson Spyros Chrysostomou, the accident occurred at around 6.45pm on Wednesday at the junction of Georgios Seferis and Andreas Kelpis streets in Aradippou. The victim was 31-year-old Blazej Jerzy Rejnowski, a Polish national and permanent resident of Cyprus.

Chrysostomou said that initial findings from the Larnaca traffic police indicate that Rejnowski was running along Georgios Seferis street for exercise when he was struck by a saloon car driven by the 44-year-old man. The man was fatally injured and rushed to Larnaca general hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver underwent an alcohol test, which came back negative, and a drug test, which showed positive results for cannabis.

A court warrant was issued for the driver’s arrest, and he was taken into custody on charges related to causing death by negligence, negligent driving, and driving under the influence of drugs.

The exact cause of the 31-year-old’s death is expected to be determined during a post-mortem scheduled for Saturday.
