Authorities on Monday confirmed that an inmate at the central prisons had been physically assaulted over the weekend, but said the person was now in good health and expected to be discharged from hospital soon.

In a statement, the Department of Prisons said the incident occurred shortly before 8pm on Sunday, when a group of inmates attacked the individual.

The department added that a warden immediately noticed what was happening “and the episode was immediately suppressed”.

The assaulted inmate was first treated at the prisons’ medical facility, and later transferred to Nicosia general hospital to undergo more tests.

The person is in good health, and is expected to be discharged from hospital soon.

A probe into the incident has been launched by the department, which has also notified the police.

Authorities have contacted the person’s lawyer, since the inmate in question has no next of kin in Cyprus.
Earlier, media reported that the assaulted inmate is a Bulgarian national. The man was reportedly beaten until he lost consciousness.

CID is investigating.

The Cyprus Mail understands that, up until the early afternoon of Monday, the victim had not given a statement to police or filed a complaint.
