Police on Thursday were in pursuit of a man who refused to stop when officers flagged down his car for a check.

The initial incident took place around 3.30pm in the area of Pareklisia, Limassol. Drug Squad officers tried to flag down a suspect vehicle, but the driver did not comply and sped off.

Trying to get away, the man caused a traffic accident, after which he got out of the car and fled on foot.

Media reports said police officers fired warning shots in the air as they gave chase.

Police have impounded the man’s vehicle and are conducting checks.

Some media outlets said the suspect, aged 42, had been convicted on drug-related offences in the past.
