How about a day out in a charming old neighbourhood in Nicosia? Agioi Omologites, with its narrow streets, old houses, colourful courtyards and vibrant cultural centres, is hosting a lively Neighbourhood Festival on May 10, inviting the public to a day full of music, movement and community spirit.

Organised by the Cultural Workshop of Agioi Omologites, in collaboration with Nicosia Municipality, the Dance-Dance event is designed to be a joyful day of gathering, sharing and celebration. Get ready for traditional dance workshops, live music and plenty of opportunities to connect with others.

The festival began in 2011, an initiative co-organised by the Cultural Workshop and the neighbourhood’s residents to revive and strengthen the local community spirit. This spring, it returns once again to offer memorable moments of joy through dance and music for people of all ages. The dance workshops will take place at three different spots around the neighbourhood, each featuring different dances from a variety of regions, giving visitors a real taste of diverse traditions.

Throughout the afternoon, visitors will have the opportunity to learn dances from Cyprus, Asia Minor, the Aegean Islands, Epirus and Pontus, guided by experienced dance instructors. Workshops will run from 5.30pm to 8.30pm, creating a fun, relaxed atmosphere where beginners and experienced dancers alike are welcome. The teaching will be tailored to the participants’ needs, while staying true to the authentic character, style and ethos of each dance tradition.

“Dance – Dance is the event’s title,” say organisers, “not as a command, but as an encouragement! Dance is for everyone and everyone can do it.” Whether you are taking your first dance steps or have been dancing for years, all are invited to join.

At 8.30pm, a festive traditional music celebration will follow in the courtyard of the Holy Church, where attendees can dance the steps they have learned earlier, as well as enjoy other dances performed by a distinguished group of musicians: Michalis Kouloumis on violin, Thodoris Karyofyllidis on Pontic lyra, Michalis Kyprianou on clarinet, bagpipe and tsambouna, Haris Kapsokefalos on laouto and vocals, Elena Xyda on vocals, and Thodoris Papadopoulos on percussion.

Throughout the evening, tables and chairs will be set up across the neighbourhood, along with various activity points, including traditional games, a photography exhibition, and children’s activities, organised in collaboration with other cultural groups. For one magical evening, Agioi Omologites will transform into an even brighter cultural hub, celebrating community, tradition, and the simple joy of dancing together.
