Maria Angela Holguin, the UN chief’s personal envoy on Cyprus, is continuing her contacts in Cyprus and has already met the negotiating teams.
According to the Cyprus News Agency, on Tuesday Holguin met with both the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot negotiating teams, led by Menelaos Menelaou and Güneş Onar respectively.
She also had meetings with the Technical Committees on Culture and the Environment.
On Wednesday, she is scheduled to meet with the Technical Committee on Youth and members of the diplomatic community.
On Tuesday, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Holguin’s aim was to achieve results by the end of July.
Speaking at UN headquarters in New York, Dujarric said Holguin will remain in Cyprus until May 31.
He said that during her meetings with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar she listened to the leaders’ concerns and reviewed the set of confidence-building initiatives agreed by the parties during their last meeting in Geneva last March.
Holguin said her aim was to work with the parties to achieve results by the end of July, when the next meeting with the UN secretary-general is set to take place, Dujarric added.
While in Cyprus, he said, Holguin will be meeting with other parties involved in the Cyprus problem, as well as representatives of the three guarantor powers, namely Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced that an informal meeting on Cyprus in a broader format will be held at the end of July, following a similar meeting in Geneva, on March 17 and 18.
In early May, the UN chief announced the appointment of Maria Angela Holguin as his personal envoy on Cyprus, who is tasked to reengage with the parties in order to work on next steps on the Cyprus issue and advise him. Holguin completed a previous assignment as personal envoy from January to July 2024.
The European Commission designated Johannes Hahn, a former European Commissioner, as Special Envoy for Cyprus to contribute to the settlement process, in close cooperation with Holguin.
