Two men aged 20 to be sentenced in rape case

Larnaca courthouse

The Larnaca – Famagusta criminal court will sentence two men, both aged 20, on Wednesday after they were found guilty of raping an underage girl in Ayia Napa in the summer of 2020.

Until then, the defendants remain in custody.

The two were found guilty on Wednesday after the testimony of the complainant, who was the key witness was deemed credible by the court, Cyprus News Agency reported.

It added the hearing of the case had been held behind closed doors to protect the identity of the young woman, who was 17 when the crime occurred.

According to her complaint to the police, the two defendants, who were acquainted with the teenage girl, found her at a night club in Ayia Napa.

While she was under the influence of alcohol, they took her to a hotel room where they had intercourse with her against her will.

Before the court proceeds with the sentence, the defence will present mitigating factors relating to the offence or the defendant personally so they can be taken into account during sentencing.
