An 83-year-old man who was hospitalised after a traffic accident in Nicosia died on Friday, a police statement said.

Socrates Constantinides was being treated at the orthopaedic ward of the Nicosia general hospital where he was transferred after he was hit by a car at a pedestrian crossing in Strovolos last Saturday.

Police said he died shortly after 6am. The exact causes of his death will be determined by an autopsy set to be carried out by a state forensic examiner.

The exact causes of the collision remain under investigation, police added.

According to the announcement, the accident took place around 5.30pm on Saturday on Nikis Avenue near the junction with Kyriakou Matsi.

A 26-year-old, who was driving his car on the right lane of the road towards Nicosia, crashed into the pensioner, who was crossing the road on foot.

An ambulance rushed to the scene to take the man to hospital, while traffic officers carried out investigations at the scene.
