The European research project TOPIO, the objective of which is to develop techniques and methodologies for assessing landscape quality in environmentally significant areas, is organising a Cyprus-based event this week. The Lara Turtle Museum and Educational Center in Ineia, Paphos will host the one-day occasion this Saturday, inviting the public to get to know more about the area’s environmental issues and the project’s goals.

The European initiative is led by Greek researchers. Its focus is on developing innovative methods to evaluate landscape quality in rural and protected areas, with an emphasis on conservation and sustainable development. It promotes public participation and leverages advanced technologies such as geoinformatics and artificial intelligence.

As part of the TOPIO project, J&G Engineering and Architecture Ltd., the Cyprus-based partner, is organising this Saturday’s event titled Akamas in Action. Through a series of talks and participatory actions, the event will share the programme’s mission with a particular focus on the Akamas Peninsula, one of the project’s seven case study areas.

“The Akamas Peninsula is one of Cyprus’ most valuable natural and cultural landscapes,” say organisers. “However, it faces significant challenges due to tourism, urban expansion and other human activities, leading to landscape degradation. Through TOPIO, various activities are being organised to engage both residents and visitors in conservation efforts, including guided nature hikes, hands-on workshops, and research initiatives aimed at raising awareness and fostering community involvement.”

Saturday’s programme includes short presentations and interactive activities that highlight the environmental significance of Akamas. Findings related to the Akamas landscape, including its natural, cultural, and social dimensions, will be presented.

The event presents a unique opportunity for the public to learn about the TOPIO project, contribute to discussions on the future of Akamas, and become part of a broader European effort toward sustainable landscape management. The day begins at 9.30am and concludes just after noon with a guided tour of the museum.
