A colossal pianist not just for Cyprus but the world is getting ready for a grand recital this week in Limassol. Martino Tirimo will take the stage of the Rialto Theatre on Thursday to perform significant works from the classical repertoire. The Cypriot pianist will charm audiences with compositions by Schubert, Beethoven and Chopin.
The internationally acclaimed pianist and conductor Tirimo began his career as a child prodigy. At the age of 12, he conducted La Traviata seven times at an opera festival in Cyprus, with an orchestra and soloists from La Scala, Milan.
In 2019, he released the complete cycle of Beethoven’s piano works (16 CDs), recorded at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. The Spectator described this recording in 2020 as “the greatest recording achievement of the anniversary year.”
Born in Larnaca, he studied on scholarships in Britain and Vienna, with a pivotal mentorship under Gordon Green. In 1971-72, he won distinctions at the Munich and Geneva international competitions, launching a distinguished career alongside leading orchestras and conductors such as Sir John Barbirolli, Sir Simon Rattle, Kurt Masur and Semyon Bychkov. He has performed the complete piano works of Beethoven, Mozart, Debussy, Janáček, Chopin and Schubert in numerous concerts.
His distinctions have been many, both as a conductor and a musician. In 2011, he received the Nemitsas Foundation Award, and in 2024, he released a complete recording of Chopin’s works. Now, all is set for his Limassol performance presenting sonatas, waltz and more.
