What is Ordinary Magic? In Nicosia’s dance world this month, it is a special performance crafted by 16 teenagers that tackles the theme of mental resilience, where dance, visual arts and music coexist. On February 22 and 23, the performance will be staged at Dance House Lefkosia.
The performance was created in the framework of the More Than Dancing programme, an educational initiative with the guidance of dance educator and choreographer Maria Kamberis, visual artist Leontios Toumbouris and musician Natasa Hadjiandreou. Participating in the programme were teens aged 12 to 18 who developed the Ordinary Magic performance.
“The adaptation to a constantly changing and evolving environment served as the inspiration for the design and implementation of the programme,” say organisers. “The main objective was to create a group of teenagers and involve them actively in the creative process during the production of the performance through exploration and experimentation. During the various phases of the programme, we explored the theme through methods of deconstruction, reconstruction and reformation to create form and patterns in movement, music and scenography.”
The process included transforming everyday issues teens face into manageable challenges, which in turn, birthed the Ordinary Magic performance. Movement vocabulary, guided improvisation, props usage and music composition all contributed to this creation, which is about to be presented in front of Nicosia audiences.
