A walk focused on feminist movements, activism and the struggles of women in Cyprus is planned for this Saturday, coinciding with International Women’s Day. The Nicosia walk is organised by the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation in collaboration with the bahçes histories of Cyprus and will take participants on a different kind of tour of walled Nicosia.
Inspired by Act I: The People of Cyprus of the Cyprus Insula exhibition – History, Memory, Reality, the walk will explore the interwoven histories of women’s movements, struggles and feminism in Cyprus. Emphasising the dynamic interplay between agency and structures and situating women’s histories within broader narratives of time, place and identity, it will reveal their role in shaping Cyprus’ past and present.
From early feminism to intercommunal solidarity and contemporary feminist activism, this walk will discuss how the women of Cyprus have navigated their personal and collective circumstances within the social, political and economic contexts of their times. The walk is free to attend yet requires pre-booking and though it will be in Greek, there will be simultaneous translation into English if needed to welcome participants from all backgrounds.
