Two separate kitchen fires that broke out in Nicosia and Famagusta, resulting in two people being taken to hospital, were reported on Thursday.

According to the fire service, the first fire happened shortly after 4pm on Wednesday in a semi-basement apartment in Anthoupoli. Two fire trucks were deployed to the scene and firefighters extinguished the blaze using water hoses and breathing apparatus.

The fire caused damage to the kitchen and its installations. The resident of the house was transported by ambulance to the Nicosia hospital emergency department suffering from burns to her face.

The cause of the fire was cooking oil which had been left unattended.

The second fire broke out shortly before 5pm, also in a kitchen, in Sotira, and two staffed fire trucks were sent to extinguish the blaze.

The fire similarly had started from a pan left unattended on a stove. No significant damage was caused. According to the fire service the fire was extinguished “by removing the cooking utensil to an open space.”

The elderly resident was transported by ambulance to the Famagusta hospital’s emergency department to receive care for smoke inhalation.
