The temporary photography exhibition that is currently on at AG Leventis Gallery has a packed programme of parallel activities and events to accompany it. Apart from the Look at Me! Portraits in Greece by Robert Α. McCabe that is on until this September, sidebar events will be happening throughout spring and summer with photography and local culture at their core.
First up is a photography competition open to amateur photographers aged 15 and above that runs until May 21. “Photography has become an integral part of our daily lives,” says the gallery, “from a simple selfie to the urge to capture moments, faces and emotions. In this spirit, the AG Leventis Gallery is launching a photography competition aimed at showcasing the portraits of the people of today’s Cyprus.
“In recent years,” it adds, “Cyprus has experienced significant social and demographic changes, reflecting an increasingly multicultural world. So, who are the people that make up the island today? With this question in mind, we invite the public to take part in the competition and capture – even with just their mobile phones – the faces that make up the island’s diverse social landscape.”
The winners will earn a €500 cash award for the first prize and photography-related publications for second and third places. Ten entries will be selected and receive a participation distinction and their photographs will be exhibited at the A. G. Leventis Gallery.
As part of a collaboration with People of Cyprus, the AG Leventis Gallery is organising two photography walks titled Coexisting in Inner Nicosia – Discovering the Multicultural Roots and Voices of the City. On May 10 and 17, participants will explore the old city within the Venetian walls of Nicosia and have the opportunity to photograph faces from different communities of the island, documenting the modern multicultural identity of the Cypriot capital.
What’s more, a creative workshop for those who wish to delve deeper into the art of photography will take place on May 10 and 28 at the AG Leventis Gallery in collaboration with photographer Konstantinos Konstantinou. Titled The Magic of the Photogram, aspiring photographers aged 15 and over will learn about the history and aesthetic of photograms, experiment with materials and compositions, and explore how light – and its absence – can tell stories. No previous experience is required, just curiosity and a creative spirit.
On May 10, the workshop will take place between 10.30am and 2pm while on May 28, it will run from 6pm to 9.30pm. Participation costs €35 and reservations are required.
A parallel exhibition will also run as part of this programme. Titled Kafenes: Stories in Black and White Frames will open on June 17, showcased by People of Cyprus and dedicated to traditional Cypriot coffee houses and the fading customs they represent.
Finally, the gallery will also present summer cinema nights on its rooftop garden. From late June through July, the 15th floor of the Leventis Tower will transform into a rooftop summer cinema showcasing classic Greek films and more.
