The Italian navy frigate Federico Martinengo arrived in waters near Cyprus on Wednesday as part of a coordinated European naval deployment aimed at reinforcing the island’s security amid heightened tensions due to the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.
The warship, carrying more than 160 personnel from the Italian Navy, sailed from the southern Italian port of Taranto last week and joined a growing multinational armada in the eastern Mediterranean.
Officials described the deployment as a protective initiative undertaken in coordination with several European partners to strengthen security around the island.
According to Italian authorities, the mission forms part of a broader effort involving forces from Greece, France, Spain and the Netherlands, all of which have moved naval assets into the region in recent days.
Among the vessels operating nearby is the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, which has been positioned in the eastern Mediterranean as part of the wider security posture.
The arrival of the Martinengo comes after reports earlier this week of a drone strike targeting the British base area at RAF Akrotiri, an incident that prompted additional security coordination among European partners.
Italian defence officials described the frigate as a modern multi role warship capable of carrying out maritime surveillance, air defence and security operations.
The vessel is equipped with advanced radar and missile systems designed to detect and intercept aerial threats.
The Martinengo is part of a broader European armada that includes several air defence capable ships operating around Cyprus.
Spanish authorities have confirmed the deployment of the frigate Cristobal Colon, while France has dispatched the warship Languedoc to the area.
Greek naval vessels, including the frigates Kimon and Psara, have also been operating near the island with missile and radar systems capable of tracking airborne threats.
The Dutch navy has likewise prepared to contribute to the mission, with the air defence and command frigate HNLMS Evertsen sailing alongside the Charles de Gaulle as part of the multinational formation.
The Dutch vessel carries roughly 200 personnel and is equipped with advanced missile systems and a combat management platform designed to defend naval formations against aircraft and missiles.
The Martinengo itself has recently taken part in similar security missions. Last year the frigate completed a deployment in the Red Sea under the European Union naval force operation Aspides, where European warships were tasked with protecting commercial shipping from attacks by Houthi forces operating from Yemen.
