The department of antiquities brings children and visual artists together in the educational arts programme Artist Talks for Kids x The Cyprus Museum at the Nicosia museum from spring to summer, running until July.
Children aged six to 12 have the chance to meet contemporary artists and their artistic practices while simultaneously enjoying the archaeological exhibits and the space of the Cyprus Museum. All sessions are free to attend, and registration works on a first-come, first-served basis.
The series has already begun, and four more events are set to happen. The structure and content of the programme draw inspiration from archaeological objects depicting animals, as well as from a multidisciplinary and multimedia exploration of the theme of Animals as developed through the works of participating artists.
The aim of the programme is to strengthen visual arts and museum education, promote an interdisciplinary approach to archaeological exhibits, and cultivate awareness of the social role of the visual arts. The educational process is based on two main pillars – observation and dialogue around art and archaeological exhibits, and the production and creation of art by the children themselves.
Through hands-on activities, participants gain experiences, develop knowledge and skills while also enhancing their ability to function as both active viewers and creators of art.
The programme’s activities highlight a dynamic dialogue between contemporary artistic practices and archaeological exhibits as well as between past and present. At the same time, particular emphasis is placed on relationships between humans, animals and the natural environment, the exploration of local biodiversity, connections to mythological representations and the role of technological media in contemporary creation.
The next gathering will be on April 25 with artist Christos Akordalitis. All of the series’ events take place on Saturday morning from 10am to 11.45am at the Museum. Up next, on May 16, is a session with Vicky Perikleous, before June 20’s event with Stelios Kallinikou. The final event of the series is scheduled for July 11 with Stelios Ilchuk.
