A Greek Cypriot woman appeared in court in northern Nicosia on Monday, accused of having stolen cosmetic goods and orange juice from the Erulku hypermarket in the village of Neo Chorio in the north.

Turkish Cypriot police officer Mahmut Kolcu told the court that the theft had occurred shortly after midday on Tuesday last week, and that the woman had stolen two boxes of “under-eye products”, three cannisters of hair concealer, three nail polishes, and two bottles of orange juice.

He said that the stolen cosmetic products had a combined worth of 2,088.93TL (€37.19) and that the orange juice had a total worth of 85.70TL (€1.53).

The Turkish Cypriot police were informed of the incident on Thursday last week, and a review of the hypermarket’s CCTV footage showed the woman taking the products and entering her vehicle.

On Sunday, the woman was arrested while attempting to cross northward through the Dherynia crossing point.

Kolcu said that after being shown the CCTV footage, the woman admitted to the crime, and said that she had already taken the products she had stolen to the Republic. He then asked the court that she be remanded in custody.

The woman argued that her husband is “in another country” and that their young daughter would be “left alone” should she be given a “prolonged detention”, stressing that this would “negatively affect” the child.

Judge Zehra Yalkut Bilgec ordered that she be remanded at the north’s central prison for a period not exceeding seven days.
