Owners of land in the Akamas area will be able to apply for compensatory measures through ‘Measure 1’ as of next month for not developing their plots, thus helping to preserve the environment, the agriculture ministry said on Wednesday.

Online applications open on October 1 and close on November 15 and are available for individuals and legal entities at www.support-akamas.com who own private land within designated urban and agricultural or farming zones, amounting to a total of 93,460 decares (1 decare = 1,000 square metres).

Measure 1 provides for financial aid to landowners through a hectare subsidy for opting to preserve the landscape and protect the region’s biodiversity.

Annual subsidies reach up to €6,600 per beneficiary for the period 2024-2028, with a total budget of €25 million, after which the measure will be reassessed. Specifically, the amount has been set at €600 per hectare (1 hectare = 10 decares) with a ceiling of €6,600.

The agriculture ministry said the local community has responded positively to the measure and called on all landowners to take advantage of the subsidies.

The ministry has set certain conditions for beneficiaries. Property used for agricultural purposes can continue cultivation. Plots unused must remain that way to preserve natural vegetation. Furthermore, owners are not allowed to fence off their property or make any interventions that would alter its natural state. Property with illegal development is not eligible for the subsidy.

Furthermore, plots used for agricultural purposes can continue to participate in Agricultural Payment Organisation schemes and receive subsidies.
