A man was issued a fine of 33,926TL (€886) in Kioneli after being filmed throwing sunflower seed shells out of his car’s window.

The man had been filmed while waiting at a roundabout in Kioneli in the north, sitting in a black BMW with a personalised registration plate and throwing sunflower seeds out of the driver’s side window on multiple occasions.

With the video having amassed a number of views and complaints, the Turkish Cypriot Kioneli and Yerolakkos municipality swung into action, summoning the driver to a local police station in cooperation with the Turkish Cypriot police and issuing him with the fine.

Speaking after the incident, mayor Huseyin Amcaoglu said his municipality “will definitely not tolerate such situations”.

“While the cleanliness of our environment and our roads is our responsibility, everyone must also do their bit to keep the place clean,” he said.
