On January 27, 2025, in a warm and modest ceremony, the University of Limassol (UoL) welcomed the New Year with the traditional cutting of the vasilopita cake. This year’s event, attended by an even larger gathering of faculty and administrative staff, highlighted the university’s expansion and its continued journey toward growth and excellence.

In fact, the ceremony introduced several exciting developments planned for 2025, including the launch of new academic programmes and initiatives designed to meet the demands of an ever-changing educational landscape. With these ambitious plans, UoL continues to position itself as a leader in education, research, social impact and moral leadership.

The ceremony commenced with an address by the CEO of the University, Panayiotis Sentonas, who reflected on the progress made since the institution’s inception and the opportunities that lie ahead. “This New Year symbolises the continuation of our mission to nurture a vibrant academic community and deliver transformative education,” he said. “The growth of our University is a testament to the dedication of our staff, the trust of our stakeholders, and our unwavering commitment to shaping the future of learning and innovation.”

The Rector of the University, Professor Theodore Panayotou, also addressed attendees, emphasising the university’s collective achievements and ambitious vision for 2025. “The growth we celebrate today is not just a number,” he remarked. “As we expand our academic offerings, foster research excellence, and strengthen our community ties, we are shaping a university that cultivates pride and ambition in all of us.”

Additionally, Yiannis Tsouloftas, President of the Limassol District Local Government Organisation and a proud University of Limassol alumnus offered his own heartfelt remarks. “Being here today brings back many memories,” he said. “As an alumnus, I am filled with pride to witness the tremendous growth and vision of this university, which has always held a special place in my heart.” He extended his best wishes to the UoL community for the New Year, while sharing his deep connection to the institution.
