A man being sought after police found 50kg of cannabis was arrested on Saturday after a coordinated operation in the Kalo Chorio area, where the 41-year-old suspect was apprehended.

He was taken into police custody and is expected to appear before the Limassol District Court on Sunday where police will ask for a remand order against him.

Police believe he is the driver of the car in which the drugs were found and had escaped after a police chase on Thursday afternoon.

The large amount of cannabis was detected when members of the police drug squad YKAN attempted to stop his car for a check after they received a tip off that he was trafficking a large amount of drugs.

When approached, the driver of the car developed speed, collided with three patrol cars but managed to get away.

This was followed by a chase in the streets of Limassol during which police fired warning shots.

The driver then managed to escape on foot.

The car, which was found to be stolen, was transferred to the Limassol police department inside which a total of 41 packages containing cannabis, with a total weight of 50kg and 525g, were found.

An arrest warrant was issued against the 41-year-old man and a search launched.

A search of his home followed, where 20g of cannabis was found and confiscated.

On Saturday afternoon, after evaluating information, police located the wanted man and arrested him in Kalo Chorio, Limassol.
