A speed camera operator reported he was verbally threatened by three people on Monday, about 45 minutes after midnight, in Larnaca.

Police said the operator had set up the speed camera vehicle in Spyros Kyprianou avenue, when he was threatened by three people, who left on foot before the police got there.

The operator said the three people, aged between 30 and 40, approached him and threatened from a distance of four to five metres that if he didn’t leave they would cause damage.

Policemen patrolled the area all night to protect the operator.

It is not the first time speed camera operators have come under threat. In 2022, people were caught by the police pelting mobile traffic cameras with stones.

Later the same year, shots were fired at mobile traffic camera operators, they reported.

In 2023, police said they were taking extra measures to track down motorists who have attacked mobile traffic camera units and to take more preventative steps to put an end to the growing phenomenon.
