Remand in connection to sham marriage case

Three people were remanded for six days in connection with sham marriages and assisting in activities related to illegal entry to the country, police said on Sunday.

Their remand began on Saturday for the individuals aged 18, 19 and 34, who were arrested a day earlier in Nicosia.

Officers received a tip that the 34-year-old was involved in sham marriages and after his arrest, it appeared the man lived in the Republic illegally.

During questioning, it emerged that the 34-year-old had given money to the 18 and 19-year-olds to carry out a sham marriage so they could stay in the country.

Nicosia CID continues investigations.
