Akel and Green Party politicians met with the German ambassador to Cyprus to discuss the ongoing trial of Kurdish political activist Kenan Ayaz, it emerged on Friday.

According to a statement by Ayaz’s team, Akel MP Giorgos Koukoumas and Green party leader Giorgos Perdikis met with ambassador Anke Schlimm the previous day, where they sought to “express the strong feeling of solidarity” by the majority of Cypriots for Ayaz.

Last month, Ayaz’s team accused the secret services of Turkey, Germany, or both of orchestrating an “attack” against him, after one of Ayaz’s lawyers reported that his laptop was stolen from the hotel room.

Schlimm denied to the team that the German government had anything to do with the matter, reiterating that it was for the justice system to investigate, according to the statement.

Ayaz’s team also reiterated what they described as the conditions of Ayaz’s extradition to Germany for the trial.

“If Ayaz is sentenced, he should not be extradited to Turkey but instead carry out his sentence in Cyprus. These conditions should be respected.”
