Further cold snap expected at beginning of next week

More snow and low temperatures are expected for the coming week, with temperatures not going above zero in Troodos on Sunday, the met office said on Friday.

Director Kleanthis Nicolaides told the Cyprus News Agency that weather system Elpis, currently affecting Greece, is expected to move towards the island on Saturday evening, bringing with it cold winds.

The intensity will not be as high as in Greece and will not require any warnings above a yellow, he added.

The weather on Saturday will be cloudy, and isolated showers and storms are expected to initially affect the western part of the island before spreading to the rest, while snow is expected to fall on the mountains.

Nicolaides said that the weather is expected to worsen on Sunday evening, with gale force winds (level 7 and above) and more snow expected in lower areas at an altitude between 300 and 600 metres.

On Monday, the temperature will fall further to levels below the average for this time of year.

Meanwhile, the temperature in the highest parts of the Troodos mountains will not surpass zero for the following few days.
