Elderly woman hands over €70,000 in ‘doctor scam’

An elderly woman in Larnaca was scammed into handing over €70,000 of cash, which she had at home, to  scammers.

According to the police, on Sunday evening the 79-year-old filed a report stating she had received a phone call on her landline from a man unknown to her posing as a doctor, who told her that her daughter was seriously injured and needed leg surgery.

According to he statement, the elderly woman agreed to take the €70,000 to a church where they agreed to meet. The 79-year-old went to the spot where she was met by an unknown woman who took the money.

The elderly victim described the perpetrator to the police who are investigating in order to identify the scammers.

According to the description given to the police, the unknown woman is approximately 60 years old, possibly of Cypriot origin, of slim build with straight black hair.
