Paphos police arrested a couple on Friday following a call about a disturbance in a hotel room and a report that one of the two was allegedly self-harming.

According to CID chief Michalis Nicolaou, police received the information shortly after midnight and officers went to the hotel in Kato Paphos.

In the room they were met by a 50-year-old man and his wife, aged 53, who were on the island for few days’ holiday.

According to police, the 50-year-old man was bleeding, and both were in a state of inebriation. Testimony obtained revealed that the 50-year-old had injured himself with a knife.

Police attempted to calm down the pair who then allegedly attacked the officers, pushing, kicking and verbally abusing them.

An ambulance was called to transfer the pair to hospital. One member of the police force was also treated for minor injuries.

Police subsequently arrested the couple for the offences of drunkenness, disorderly conduct, common assault, resisting lawful arrest and obstructing a police officer in the performance of his duty.

They are being held in custody at the central Paphos police station.
