President Nikos Christodoulides is set to press for more EU involvement in deescalating the situation in the Middle East during the EU Council meeting on Thursday and Friday, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said on Tuesday.

He added that the president is also expected to raise the issue of further support being given to regional partners including Egypt and Jordan.

Letymbiotis said the president will also raise the negative consequences that a possible escalation of tension may bring to the area.

He added that the agenda of the European Council includes the Russian attack on Ukraine, migration, foreign affairs with the developments in the Middle East at the centre, the discussion on the revision of the Multiannual Fiscal Framework, and debate on the economy.

He added that the session will be preceded by the established preparatory session of the European People’s Party, in which the president will participate.
