Public sector employment in Cyprus fluctuates in third quarter

Public sector employment in Cyprus experienced a notable fluctuation during the third quarter of 2023, with an increase of 1,878 individuals compared to the same period in 2022, according to a report released this week by the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat).

The rise was predominantly witnessed within non-profit organisations and local authorities.

However, it saw a decrease of 1,019 positions in comparison to the second quarter of the current year.

According to the report, the total workforce in the broad public sector during Q3 2023 was recorded at 72,307, a significant rise from 70,429 reported in the third quarter of 2022 but a decrease from the figure of 73,326 recorded in Q2 2023.

Within the general government sector, employment figures grew to 66,496 individuals in Q3 2023, up from 64,726 in the corresponding period of 2022.

Meanwhile, positions in companies and businesses controlled by the government reached 5,811, a slight increase from 5,703 in the previous year’s third quarter.

Specifically, when examining the general government, which comprises the government itself, non-profit organisations, and local authorities, employment figures stood at 52,237 (down from 52,730 in Q3 2022), 9,733 (up from 7,626 in Q3 2022), and 4,526 individuals (an increase from 4,370 in Q3 2022), respectively.
