Busting taboos: the all-consuming chaos of eating disorders

This video is meant to expand your general knowledge about living a healthy life and is NOT a substitute for seeking medical advice. Please consult with your doctor before making changes in your health practices, diet and self-care.

Eating disorders are illnesses in which people experience severe disturbances in their eating behaviours and related thoughts and emotions, with those affected becoming pre-occupied with food and their body weight.

Eating disorders can be crippling, and appear to be on the rise; according to the ‘American Journal of Clinical Nutrition’ global eating disorder prevalence increased from 3.4 per cent to 7.8 per cent over 2000-18.

In this video, Australia-based GP Dr. Erin Gordon directs our attention to eating disorders, discussing the effects of anorexia, bulimia and binge-eating, and what strategies are being used in her country to help tame the chaos and suffering caused.

Remember, the first step to recovery, if you or a loved one are struggling with an eating disorder, is talking about it. Seek help from your GP and reach out to your network for support in your healing journey. Recovery from an eating disorder IS possible, and you owe it to yourself to seek your best health, always.
