United by Pride: bicommunal march

2 (1)

Pride celebrations on the island are still on and coming up this weekend is an event that does more than simply give the message of love and acceptance but also of peace and inclusivity. The United by Pride event was introduced last year by several local groups and institutions as Cyprus’ first intercommunal Pride event. LGBTQI+ communities and allies across the island’s divide joined forces and this June, they repeat the occasion.

Coming together once again the Queer Collective Cy, the Queer Cyprus Association, LGBT PILIPINAS, LGBT Africa, LGBTQIA+ & Allies Students Club of the University of Cyprus, LGBTQ+ Cypriot Diaspora, and European University Cyprus, are bringing the 2023 edition.

“Following the tremendous success of last year’s inaugural intercommunal Pride,” say organisers, “which brought together LGBTQI+ Cypriots and individuals from communities across the island in an unparalleled display of solidarity, this year’s event promises to be even more remarkable. Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 17!”

The event will feature two parallel marches commencing at 6pm from two central locations in Nicosia, namely Eleftheria Square and Kuğulu Park. The marches will culminate at the UN Buffer Zone at 7pm, providing a symbolic gathering space resonating a message of inclusivity, justice, peace and unity. As the evening progresses, the festivities will continue with DJ and drag performances until 11pm.

“We invite you to join us in this momentous celebration of diversity and equality,” conclude organisers. “Your presence and support would contribute significantly to the success of this event, sending a powerful message of solidarity beyond borders to LGBTQI+ individuals in Cyprus and around the world.”
