Two suspects charged over violent incidents at stadium to appear in court next month

Two of the suspects charged in relation to the violent incidents at Antonis Papadopoulos stadium in Larnaca last month will appear in court on June 3.

The incidents that took place before the Anorthosis-Apollon football match on April 30, resulted to the injury of Evripides Frangou, 20, who suffered burns in 45 per cent of his body.

The two suspects were scheduled to appear in court on Thursday to be arraigned.

However, the 30-year-old could not be located to be served and the court set June 3 as the date for him to appear.

Meanwhile, the lawyer of the younger suspect said that he failed to receive copies of the statements and asked for more time to answer the charges. The court set the same date for his arraignment hearing.

The court also issued an exclusion order against the 22-year-old from all the stadiums of the government-controlled areas.

Another two suspects, aged 32 and 31, were arrested in relation to the violent incidents while more are sought by the police. Their details are published on police’s official website.

According to the evidence under investigation, fans of the two teams had started small fires with fireworks in a field opposite the stadium ahead of the match, which were put out by police and the fire service.

Frangou, who was recently discharged from the hospital, was allegedly injured by a molotov cocktail explosion when he was trying to put out a fire he noticed as he was passing the stadium while walking his dog.

He suffered burns on his face, ear, hands, feet and back.

A doctor from the department of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Sheba medical centre at Tel HaShomer arrived on the island from Israel and treated Frangou earlier this month.

Frangou has yet to testify to the police.
