Cyprus energy sector to benefit from new RIF programmes

Cyprus sustainability renewable RES sustainable

The Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) this week announced two new sponsorship programmes aimed at bolstering the energy sector and facilitating the green transition in Cyprus.

According to a press release by the RIF, these programmes align with the objectives of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, known as “Cyprus Tomorrow.”

Moreover, the foundation has secured additional funding through the European Commission’s REPowerEU scheme to transform the energy system and expedite the green transition.

The first programme revolves around a new call for proposals under the “Research in Enterprises-Energy” programme, with a total budget of €4 million.

This initiative primarily focuses on developing technological solutions to address Cyprus’ challenges in electricity production, storage, transmission, and distribution.

The ultimate goal is to create products and services that can be utilised by entities operating within this sector.

Projects under this programme can receive a maximum funding of €200,000 per project.

Proposal submissions are through the IRIS portal, with the deadline set for January 26, 2024.

The second programme, titled “CO-DEVELOP-REPowerEU,” with a budget of €6 million, will be announced in the coming days.

Under this programme, businesses and research organisations will collaborate to jointly design and develop new technologies and economically efficient solutions.

These solutions will address challenges such as climate change, energy efficiency in industries, harnessing renewable energy sources, and ensuring the resilience and security of energy systems.

Recipients selected for funding will have access to free innovation support services and knowledge transfer tools provided by the foundation.

These programmes serve as instruments for fostering collaborations, transferring technology, and commercially leveraging research.

They also act as a driving force to enhance the competitiveness of Cypriot businesses and accelerate the transition toward a modern, resource-efficient, and sustainable economy.
