Performance explores identity and gender

01

Part of Rialto Theatre’s December agenda is the dance performance Say Yes! Again and Again which explores the many layers of identity and gender in a playful and empowering way. Presented by En Drasi, the performance was created by Evie Demetriou with performers Eleftheria Sokratous, Bas van der Kruk and Rania Glymitsa who are getting ready to take the stage later this month.

Three performers of different nationalities, using movement and text, share personal experiences that shaped them as people, as a way to explore social norms, queer subjectivities and normative pressures. The research for the performance started with the work Say Yes!, which has since been reworked and expanded to the performance Say Υes! Again and Again.

The work is part of the choreographer’s ongoing research to address social justice issues. While she envisions performances as the start of a dialogue with the audience, she explores various performative ways to engage with body politics in the performance. Inspired by Maree Brown’s book Pleasure Activism and the optimistic and empowering way she addresses activism, Demetriou engages in the performance with positivity and enablement to saying Yes to ourselves and our needs.

Before the performance takes the stage of Rialto Theatre on December 28, the performers will also present the work in the capital city as well. Theatro Dentro will welcome the artists and the public on December 27 for a single-night show.
